Delivery of rehabilitation services to the hearing impaired population in India requires as systematic, equitable and accessible manner. A large number of hearing impaired living in rural, far-flung and remote areas do not get the services, due to the paucity of attention and usage of technology, that the hearing impaired living in urban areas get. To meet these challenges and with the aim of making available the services in terms of awareness, identification, diagnosis, fitment, counselling and intervention programs, an Outreach and Extension Service Department was created and launched in the year 1989 in the month of January.
Since then, a team of multi–professionals armed with technical knowledge, diagnostic equipment and fitment of aids under the ADIP scheme of Government of India, provide services by reaching out and camping in rural and far-flung areas – right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and far east places as well. In addition, they also provide professional guidance to the interested localNGO’s of the rural areas, in terms of short-term training, the creation of awareness, setting up service centres, preschools, vocational training centres, with community based rehabilitation programmes etc.
