EXTENSION COUNTER GOA
About Us: AYJNISHD(D) Extension Counter Goa
The AYJNISHD(D) Extension Counter in Goa is a pioneering initiative of AYJNISHD(D) Mumbai, launched in collaboration with the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and Goa University as per the guidance of Shri Rajesh Agarwal, Secretary of DEPwD under MSJ&E, Govt. of India. This marks a significant milestone in extending and advancing disability education and services within the state of goa, aimed at promoting inclusivity and empowerment for individuals with disabilities.
For the first time, the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech & Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD), under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DePwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJ&E), Government of India, with the approval of RCI has introduced two specialized diploma courses in Goa:
- Diploma in Indian Sign Language Interpretation (DISLI):
- Open to candidates with Senior Secondary education (10+2) or equivalent, securing at least 50% marks.
- Candidates must have functional hands, be fluent in at least one language, and possess normal hearing sensitivity.
- Diploma in Teaching Indian Sign Language (DTISL):
- Open to candidates with Senior Secondary education (10+2) or equivalent, securing at least 45% marks.
- Applicants must be proficient in Indian Sign Language (ISL), possess a Certificate of Disability (Deaf), and pass an interview and ISL skill assessment.
These courses are the first step in a larger initiative resulting from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AYJNISHD, the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, and Goa University on 8th May 2024. The MoU not only facilitates the establishment of the Extension Counter of AYJNISHD(D) in Goa but also paves the way for the future creation of a Composite Rehabilitation Centre (CRC) in the state. These programs are designed to equip students with essential skills that will enable them to serve the deaf community by bridging communication gaps and fostering a more inclusive society. The introduction of DISLI and DTISL in Goa is a transformative step towards filling up the existing manpower gap in the field of Indian Sign Language Interpreters, building a more accessible and compassionate society—one where everyone’s voice is heard.
Prospective candidates can apply for these courses by submitting their completed application forms, along with the necessary educational certificates, a Certificate of Disability (for DTISL), and results from the interview and ISL skill assessment (for DTISL). Eligibility is determined according to the norms set by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).The AYJNISHD(D) Extension Counter Goa, situated in the University of Goa campus, is dedicated to creating a platform for enhancing education and services related to disability, contributing to the empowerment of individuals and supporting the broader vision of inclusivity in the state.
