Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan)-AYJNISHD-D, Regional Centre , Janla was started as a State Collaborated Training Center I.e. Training Center for Teacher of Deaf in 1986, operated at SIDR campus. In 2008-09, the institute has its own building at Janla and has been functioning independently as a Regional Center of AYJNISHD-D.
It is an autonomous Institute under the Department of Empowerment of Person with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. The Institute was renamed from Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped to Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) , Mumbai on 07.09.2016.
Aims and objective of the Centre
Aims –
- To act as a regional extension centre of AYJNISHD, Mumbai, for implementing programmes and services in the field of speech, hearing, and communication disorders in Odisha and adjoining states.
- To provide need-based rehabilitation, education, and empowerment services for persons with speech and hearing disabilities at the regional level.
- To promote accessibility, inclusivity, and capacity-building of professionals working with persons with speech and hearing disabilities.
Objectives –
- Human Resource Development
- To conduct diploma, degree, and certificate-level courses in special education, audiology, speech-language pathology, and sign language interpretation.
- To train rehabilitation professionals, teachers, and community workers for effective service delivery.
- Clinical & Rehabilitation Services
- To provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services in audiology, speech-language pathology, and sign language.
- To run early intervention and special education programmes for children with hearing impairment.
- To provide counselling and family support services.
- Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
- To collaborate with State Government, NGOs, and community organisations for outreach programmes in rural and tribal areas.
- To conduct assessment and distribution of assistive devices (hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc.).
- Indian Sign Language (ISL) Promotion
- To conduct training programmes for teachers, interpreters, and the public in Indian Sign Language.
- To support implementation of projects like Sanketa Mo Bhasha and ISL promotion in Odisha.
- Research & Development
- To undertake region-specific research in the areas of speech, hearing, deaf education, and sign language.
- To document local practices, needs, and outcomes for policy support.
- Awareness & Sensitization
- To organise workshops, seminars, and awareness programmes on rights and welfare schemes for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
- To observe international and national days related to disability for advocacy and awareness.
- Collaboration with Government & Institutions
- To work in close coordination with State Government departments like SSEPD, Health & Family Welfare, and School & Mass Education.
- To provide technical support in policy implementation and inclusive education initiatives
Clinical Services –
The Institute is equipped with state of art instrument for Hearing & Speech assessment and intervention, educational evaluation of persons with hearing impairment and psychological evaluation. The Centre provides clinical services at subsidized rate from Monday to Friday between 09.00 am to 05.30 pm and Saturday at 09.00 am to 01.00 pm (Closed on Sunday and Gazetted Holiday).
UNITS –
AUDIOLOGY UNIT :
Audiology is branch of science which deals with study of hearing , balance and disorders. Audiologist is registered hearing health care professional who specialized in the screening, diagnosis and management of hearing and vestibular disorders in children and adults. Audiologists use various requirements and techniques for assessment of hearing and balance function such as pure tone audiometer, admittance audiometry, speech audiometry, Auditory Brainstem Response, Otoacoustic emission (OAE) measures and Auditory Steady State Responses (ASSR). After measurement of hearing , many children and adult with hearing loss would require hearing aid, cochlear implant and assistive listening devices which are prescribed by the Audiologist . After prescription and fitment of hearing aid/ cochlear implant , individual with hearing impairment are required to undergo auditory training to maximize the use of hearing for development of speech and language skills .
The following services are provided under this unit :-
- Screening and diagnosis of hearing impairment.
- Prescription and fitment of hearing aid.
- Counseling and guidance to parents of children with hearing impairment and persons with hearing impairment .
- Post cochlear implant rehabilitation.
Eligibility for availing hearing aids under Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase / Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) Scheme :-
- An Indian Citizen of any age.
- Holds a 40% disability certificate.
- Has monthly income from all the sources not exceeding Rs.22,500/-per month( 100% assistance) ,monthly income from all the sources 22501/- to 30,000/- per month( 50% assistance)
- Who have not received assistance during the last 3 years for the same purpose from any source. However, for children below 18 years of age, this limit would be one year.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY UNIT:
Speech-Language Pathologists use various techniques and requirements for assessment and management of speech, voice, language and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages.
The following services are provided under this unit :-
- Speech and language evaluation and management of children with hearing, intellectual and developmental disorders.
- Assessment and management of stuttering and cluttering disorders
- Assessment and management of voice disorders, aphasia, dysarthria and swallowing disorder
- Pre cochlear implant assessment of speech and language skills
- Post cochlear implant intervention.
- Counselling and guidance to parents or individual
EDUCATION UNIT :
Education plays an important role in shaping the future of individual, society and in turn nation.
The following services are provided under this unit-
- Educational assessment of children with hearing impairment
- Early intervention.
- Schools placements.
- Remedial teaching for children attending mainstream schools.
- Parent guidance and Referrals.
PSYCHOLOGICAL UNIT-
It has been acknowledged that persons with speech, language and hearing disorders exhibit problems in psychosocial domain. This may be noticed as either cause, associated problems or as the effect of their primary speech, language and hearing disorders. The problems with psychosocial dimensions can be alleviated through psychological intervention and rehabilitation.
The following services are provided under this unit –
- Psychological Evaluation.
- Psychological counselling and guidance.
- Psycho therapy, Behaviour therapy and Play therapy.
LIBRARY UNIT-
The Library of Regional Centre, Janla has 2389 books. The institute has subscribed national & international ( subscribe ) journals. Internet and wifi facility is available for staff and students. The library is air conditioned and has the facility of reading & writing.
OUTREACH PROGRAMME –
The institute conducts camps for identification and management of speech , language and hearing disabilities and provides hearing aids to needy people.
SIGN LANGUAGE UNIT –
Due to late intervention or inability to develop verbal skills, children with deafness may face communication problem. conventionally children with deafness pick up gestures for communication. Sign language has been one of the modes of communication used by the children and adults with deafness. AYJNISHD, Mumbai developed and propagates the use of Indian Sign Language (ISL) throughout the country.
Indian Sign Language cell of AYJNISHD, RC, Janla has been training persons with deafness as well as persons without deafness in different levels of ISL. Two years diploma courses DISLI is also available to become ISL interpreters and DTISL for ISL instructors.
ACADEMIC CELL AND ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT –
For the benefit of students of the various courses academic cell coordinates to implement the academic calendar of the different courses. In case of any Difficulty students can approach the academic cell. Academic cell may direct them to Student Welfare Officer or course coordinators and tutors accordingly. Administrative unit manages and supports all the activities of the institute for the smooth functioning of the institute.

SHORT TERM COURSE –
The AYJNISHD RC-Janla conducts several Short-Term Training Program in institute as well as outside institute for different categories of professional/personnel such as Nurses, Health workers, Teacher, Special educator, Anganwadi worker, Audiologist, Social Worker, Psychologist and Parents etc. The main objectives of this Short-Term Training Program are to orient / update the professional / personnel in the area of Hearing Disabilities.
RESEARCH –
Research is an integral part of academics. Students are encouraged to take research work as part fulfillment of Master degree in Audiology and Speech, Language Pathology. Staff and students are encouraged to write articles and present the same in leading national or international conference. Articles are also sent for publication in international and national journals.

Institute is opened from 09.00 a.m. to 05.30 p.m. with a lunch break of 1.00 p.m. to 1.30 p.m
